1914-1918 Timeline of World War 1 – The Great War

Known as the Great War until after the end of the Second World War the First World War resulted in a devastating loss of life. After initial advances the war quickly descended into a stalemate of trench warfare with men living and fighting in appalling conditions. The situation was only resolved with a change of tactics and the introduction of new technology such as tanks.

1588 Timeline of the Spanish Armada

The Spanish Armada was a disastrous attempt by the Spanish King Philip II to overthrow Elizabeth I and remove the Protestant establishment in England. It started with the Spanish leaving Lisbon in May 1588 and ended in August 1588 when the English stopped pursuing the Spanish ships. It included the famous Elizabeth 1 Tilbury speech supposedly to rally the troops but which actually took place after the fighting had finished.
